One of the most anticipated events on the Dayboro Kindy calendar is the annual Olympathon. For over 20 years, this much-loved tradition has brought together children, families, and the wider community for a day filled with joy, camaraderie, and a dash of friendly competition. But beyond the fun, the Olympathon offers invaluable lessons in teamwork, resilience, and support.
In the weeks leading up to the event, the children spend time preparing for their big day, not just physically but also emotionally. They learn the importance of encouraging their friends, supporting each other, and embodying the mindset of “if you fall, get back up and keep trying.” These life lessons are woven into every aspect of the Olympathon experience.
The day kicks off with a special opening ceremony around the flagpole. We Acknowledge the First Australians, followed by a heartfelt rendition of Advance Australia Fair. The children proudly march in their team colours, showing off their team spirit before diving into a series of fun and engaging activities.
The event features a wide variety of activities such as running races, hopscotch, three-legged races, and more. Through these, the children develop crucial skills like gross motor coordination and physical fitness, all while experiencing the joy of being part of a team. They cheer for their friends, share in each other’s success, and learn that winning isn’t as important as trying their best and having fun along the way.
One of the core values of the Olympathon is building resilience. Whether a child stumbles in a race or struggles with an activity, they are encouraged to keep trying, fostering a “never give up” attitude that will serve them throughout life.
We are even fortunate enough to have our local policeman, Sergeant Paul, join in on the fun. With much excitement, the children line up to see how fast they can run, delighting in having their speed measured with the police speed gun. A big thank you to Sergeant Paul for being a special part of the day this year—your involvement makes the experience even more memorable for the kids!
The day wraps up with a medal presentation and a sausage sizzle tuckshop, where families gather to share a meal and celebrate the day’s achievements. The sense of community is palpable as parents join in on the fun, cheering for the children and even participating in some activities themselves.
The Olympathon is more than just a day of fun—it’s a celebration of perseverance, teamwork, and community spirit. Year after year, it brings our kindy families closer together, reminding us of the power of supporting each other and the joy that comes from simply being part of something bigger.
