Each year, one of the standout highlights on the Dayboro Kindy calendar is the much-anticipated Olympathon. For over two decades, this cherished tradition has united children, families and the broader community in a vibrant celebration of fun, friendship and a touch of friendly rivalry. More than just a series of games, the Olympathon offers meaningful opportunities for children to grow in confidence, teamwork and resilience.
In the weeks leading up to the big day, the children prepare both physically and emotionally. It’s not just about learning how to run or jump—it’s about practicing kindness, encouraging their peers and building the mindset that perseverance matters: if you fall, you get up and keep going. These powerful life lessons are at the heart of what the Olympathon is all about.
The festivities begin with a special flagpole ceremony. Together, we honour the First Nations peoples, followed by a spirited rendition of Advance Australia Fair. Dressed in vibrant team colours, the children parade in with beaming smiles and bubbling excitement, ready for a day of action.
The Olympathon features a variety of fun and energetic events—from classic running races and hopscotch to three-legged sprints and more. These activities are not only fantastic for developing gross motor skills and fitness but also help instil a strong sense of teamwork and encouragement. As children cheer each other on and celebrate one another’s efforts, they come to understand that trying your best and having fun is far more important than winning.
A key theme of the day is resilience. Whether facing a tricky challenge or taking a tumble mid-race, the children are gently encouraged to keep going, helping them build a positive, growth-focused mindset that will serve them well into the future.
As the day winds down, families gather for a celebratory medal ceremony and the much-loved sausage sizzle. It’s a chance to relax, share stories and soak in the day’s many joyful moments. Parents join in the fun too – cheering on the little athletes and sometimes even joining the activities themselves!
