At the beginning of this term, our children at Dayboro Community Kindergarten have embarked on an inspiring journey through art. For over 14 years, our kindergarten has been fostering creativity and igniting imaginations through our art program, and this year is no exception.
Our art program, spanning across terms 2 and 3, is a cornerstone of our curriculum, designed to immerse our kindy children in a world of artistic expression. From traditional techniques to contemporary explorations, with a special focus on First Nations, Asian, and Pacific artists, our aim is to not only foster an appreciation for art but also to enhance critical thinking, nurture cultural understanding, and develop essential skills that extend far beyond the canvas.
In the first term, our focus is on nurturing visual language and media exploration. Children will develop crucial pre-literacy skills alongside their creativity. Drawing lines and shapes lays the groundwork for forming letters and numbers, while also enhancing fine motor skills and spatial awareness. As children gain confidence in expressing themselves artistically, they simultaneously build the foundation for successful literacy development. Our holistic approach to early childhood education ensures that every child receives a well-rounded learning experience. Through guided activities and open-ended exploration, children learn to articulate their thought processes and unleash their creativity.
As we move into the subsequent term, our attention shifts to exploring the techniques and processes employed by artists throughout history and across cultures. This phase aims to refine visual literacy and communication skills, empowering our young learners to express themselves confidently and creatively.
In our art program, we’re not just teaching children to paint or draw; we’re nurturing their creativity and teaching them to think outside the box. One important lesson we impart to our young artists is the power of positive thinking. We emphasize that in art, there are no limits to what we can achieve. As our teachers explain, “We are going to look at all different ways to use our brains and imaginations.”
Moreover, we encourage our children to adopt a growth mindset by replacing “I can’t” with “How can I?” This simple shift in mindset empowers them to approach challenges with curiosity and determination, fostering resilience and confidence in their abilities. It’s all part of our holistic approach to education, where we not only teach academic skills but also nurture the social, emotional, and cognitive development of every child.
Already, in just a few short weeks, we’ve seen the transformative power of our art program. Children who once hesitated to pick up a pencil are now eagerly exploring their artistic abilities, and parents have remarked on the newfound interest their children have shown in drawing and creating.
As our children continue to build upon their artistic abilities, we encourage you to keep an eye out at the Dayboro Show in July. Our children will have the opportunity to showcase their individual artworks at the Dayboro Show in July, a culmination of their hard work and creativity throughout the term.
In addition to our art program, we’re thrilled to announce the continuation of a pilot program focused on Art Lessons, with our educators serving as mentors for other local kindergartens. This recognition of our unique program is a testament to the dedication and passion of our staff.
This last month has also seen our staff Dayboro Community Kindergarten has continuing to build upon our partnership with Dayboro State School to enhance the transition experience for our kindy kids. This collaboration, which has existed for many years, aims to better support families as a whole as they navigate the journey from kindy to school.
As part of this partnership, we recently hosted a free information session for parents, generously funded by the Dayboro Sheriff’s Fund. Led by the team at Bright Minds Psychology Services, the session provided practical strategies for addressing common challenges in early childhood, and we were delighted to see such positive engagement from our community. Our hope is to continue to offer our families and the broader community with opportunities to hear about different topics from many different spaces and professionals.
