Honouring Heroes: Teaching Anzac Day Values to Kindergarten Children

May 16, 2024

In the lead up to ANZAC Day, our small community kindergarten embraced the opportunity to teach our young learners about the significance of this important day in Australian history. At Dayboro Kindy, we believe in fostering a sense of understanding and respect for the sacrifices made by our servicemen and women, as well as the enduring spirit of mateship and remembrance.

Anzac Day holds a special place in the hearts of Australians, commemorating the bravery and sacrifice of those who served in the ANZACs during World War I, as well as all subsequent conflicts. While the concept of war may be difficult for young children to grasp, we approach the topic with sensitivity and age-appropriate activities that help them understand the importance of honouring our veterans and the values they fought to protect.

One way we introduced Anzac Day to our children is through storytelling and discussion. We share stories that highlight the courage and resilience of soldiers, nurses, and other individuals who played a role in wartime efforts. Through these stories, children begin to grasp the concept of sacrifice and the importance of remembering those who have served our country.

We also explored the role of animals in war, such as the brave horses, dogs, and pigeons that served alongside soldiers on the front lines. Children learned about the bond between humans and animals during times of conflict, and we discussed the ways in which animals contributed to the war effort and provided companionship and support to soldiers.

An integral part of our Anzac Day activities is the baking of Anzac biscuits. These iconic biscuits hold a special place in Australian culture, with their humble ingredients and historical significance. As we baked Anzac biscuits together, children learned about the history of these treats, which were sent by families to soldiers serving overseas during World War I. Through this hands-on activity, children not only develop practical cooking skills but also gain a deeper understanding of the traditions associated with Anzac Day.

At Dayboro Kindy, we believe that teaching children about Anzac Day is about more than just learning facts and dates. It’s about instilling values of compassion, empathy, and gratitude, and honouring the sacrifices made by those who have served our country. Through activities and discussions, we strive to foster a sense of respect and remembrance in the hearts of our young learners, ensuring that the spirit of Anzac Day lives on for generations to come.
