“Thumbs up, never give up!” has become more than just a chant at Dayboro Community Kindergarten; it’s a rallying cry embraced by our children both at kindy and at home. Inspired by a special visit from Jason Morris – A Dude That Is Different, this mantra embodies the resilience and determination that we strive to instil in our young learners.
Jason Morris, who lost his hand in an accident at 19 years old, recently visited our kindy to share his remarkable journey and to break down barriers surrounding disability and difference. His interactive presentation not only captivated the children with personal stories but also demonstrated practical skills using his prosthetic arm and hook, like tying shoelaces and unscrewing bottles. By allowing the children to touch and explore his prosthetic, Jason normalised his disability and reinforced messages of kindness, acceptance, and perseverance.
Beyond his inspiring journey, Jason shared his passion for First Nations culture through mesmerising didgeridoo performances. The children eagerly learned different techniques to create sounds and engaged in a fun game of “didgeridoo freeze,” dancing along with enthusiasm.
Jason’s visit left a profound impact on our kindy community, fostering confident self-identity, promoting positive relationships, and nurturing respect for diversity. His message of resilience, encapsulated in “Thumbs up, never give up,” continues to echo through our kindy halls, inspiring children to face challenges with determination and optimism.
